 COACHING STAFF

Nic Tyson
Assistant Coach

Nic Tyson joined the men’s rugby staff as an assistant coach in January of 2018.  The Madison, Wisconsin native brings more than 14 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school level and over 19 years of playing experience to the program.

Tyson started playing rugby during his sophomore year of high school at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin and continued in college at the University of Wisconsin.  He was invited to play with the Midwest Select Side in 2005, 2006, and 2007, and based upon his play at the National All-Star Championship (NASC’s), he was included in the USA Eagle player pool for the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

After his time in college, he continued playing with the Wisconsin Rugby Club (WRC), where he was part of a Division 2 national championship in 2013 and runner-up finishes in 2012 and 2015.

Tyson’s coaching career began at Middleton High School in 2005 while he was still playing.  He joined the University of Wisconsin coaching staff in 2008.  While there, the club placed second at Division 2 Nationals in 2009, resulting in promotion to Division 1.  He took over as head coach of the Badgers in 2014.  Under his direction, Wisconsin won the Big Ten Conference 15’s and Big Ten Conference 7’s titles, and competed at the national level in both disciplines.  The Badgers also won the Plate Championship at the Collegiate Rugby Championships (CRC) 7’s events in 2016 and 2017.
